My Story
I was asked if I wanted to help develop and teach a class on Community & Family Disaster Preparedness (This was after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.) Now this can be a pretty dry subject. So, I began to introduce different elements to enhance and enliven the presentation, but the last and final episode of the day-long class was the most tedious. I needed something to bring all the elements taught during this chapter together in some sort of interactive way. I came up with the idea of comparing making a plan with cooking a stew. ALL the ingredients for either have to be included for it to come out right. The class had all the different elements written on 3x5 cards and I ran around the class having the participants put the different “ingredients” in my “stew pot.” This kept the class engaged, but left me with no idea as to what to pull out of the stew pot at the very end. Then it occurred to me…. Magicians pull a rabbit out of a hat. So, if I could just pull a magic trick out of the stew pot, that illustrated the final message, this chapter and the class would be a success.
